It’s always better to board up windows as soon as possible, when there are less enemies around – especially anywhere with multiple windows, like the West Corridor. You can use any board on any window but it’s well worth backtracking as soon as you get a board because you don’t want more zombies suddenly appearing when some of the harder monsters are introduced towards the end of the police station section. Give them a slash with the knife and if they don’t groan or get up you’ll know they’re finally dead… again. When you’ve beaten them though don’t forget to pick up the knife from their corpse, if it hasn’t been destroyed by using it.Īnother great use for the combat knife is to poke zombies with on the ground, to see if they’re dead or not. Do this and you’ll stab them with the knife, making them drop you. When they do you’ll see a little icon appear at the bottom of the screen instructing you to press a button on the controller. Knives are very useful as a sub-weapon though, that can be used if a monster grabs you. That’s why you can pick up others as you go around. This is especially true because knives degrade with use and will break after a while – you can see how damaged they are if you look at them in your inventory and see the little horizontal bar under their picture. However, a knife fight with a zombie is a long and risky prospect so it’s not advised you try unless you know they’re nearly ‘dead’ already. The combat knife’s primary use is as a weapon. This can be very handy for boss battles as it lasts quite a while, as indicated by the little shield icon in the bottom right of the screen. However, if you combine a blue and a red herb you’ll get a special concoction that not only cures poison, and makes you less vulnerable to it for a time, but also improves your strength for a while. The blue herbs cure poison but you’ll probably find that you don’t need them very much, as there aren’t that many poisonous enemies in the game.

There are a lot more green herbs in the game then red, so feel free to top up with either one green or a green + green combination, but only if you’re not feeling confident.
Use the combo then and you’ll instantly be put back to 100% health. You can check your health status in the inventory but you’ll see the edges of the screen start go red when you’re almost dead. The best tip with herbs is to only use a combination of red + green (or a first aid spray, which is the same) when your health is in the red. New ones are introduced or change position over time and it’s usually just after an important story beat. Also, bear in mind if there’s a major cut scene or story event that means you can no longer assume everything is as you left it in terms of monsters. Try to plan your movements as carefully as possible, so don’t enter a room or area unless you have to – as this could trigger an event or monster that otherwise would’ve left you alone. But if your ammo is low that might be the time to move on anyway. Keep your distance and aim for the head, but remember that the starting weapons will take several shots to drop them to the floor and unless you see their head explode they’re almost certainly not dead. Zombies are slow and that’s your main advantage against them. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, and especially at the beginning when you don’t have many weapons, make sure to go slowly and always be prepared to run rather than fight. Claire’s later weapons are arguably more versatile though, so it evens out eventually. In that sense it doesn’t really matter which you pick first, although Claire’s starting weapon is weaker and slower to load, so Leon might be the best choice for Resident Evil newbies. Whether you choose Leon or Claire will make a big difference to the story, particularly around the middle third of the game, but unless you end up hating the game you’ll want to play through as both eventually.
